Dear Client,

As the summer comes upon us there tends to be a great deal of change from the usual routine. People take vacations at work just as the responsibilities increase at home as the kids are on school breaks. The beach calls on the weekends and it seems like the time for oneself is in really short order.

Now, more than ever, it is important to stay with the routines that nourish your bodies and souls: healthful eating, adequate sleep, and regular exercise. Yoga, with it's numerous benefits, is the perfect way to achieve the peace and mental harmony that people need to deal with all the craziness in their lives. We offer many different types of yoga classes, on weekdays and on weekends, and at different times of the day. No matter how busy your schedule is there is a Yoga class that will fit into it.

Also consider doing a meditation class or a Mommy & Baby Yoga Class - both excellent and fun options at our atudio.

I hope to see you in our studio soon,

Deborah Harris

THE MULTIPLE BENEFITS OF YOGA:
       What the studies have found!

Yoga has been around for thousands of years and has stood the test of time as a method of promoting good health and extending the life of its regular practitioners. In the last few decades, as its popularity has soared in the west, Yoga has been extensively evaluated in a number of environments. Studies have confirmed that Yoga can reduce heart rate and blood pressure, increase lung capacity, increase the amount of time you can hold your breath, improve muscle relaxation and body composition, cause weight loss and increase overall physical endurance.

Yoga may affect levels of brain or blood chemicals, including monoamines, melatonin, dopamine, stress hormones (cortisol) and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Changes in mental functions such as attention, cognition, processing of sensory information and visual perception have been described in some research studies in humans. Suggested mechanisms of action include increased parasympathetic drive, calming of stress responses, release of hormones, and brain (thalamic) activity.

In terms of specific findings that confirm the health benefits of yoga, consider this information from Aetna IntelliHealth website:

Anxiety and stress (in healthy individuals)
Several studies report that yoga may reduce anxiety and stress and improve mood in healthy people who practice yoga several times per week for 30 to 60 minutes.

High blood pressure (hypertension)
Several studies report benefits of yoga in the treatment of high blood pressure. However, many of these studies are not well designed. It is not clear if yoga is better than other forms of exercise for blood pressure control.

Heart disease
Several studies isuggest that yoga may benefit people with heart disease. Along with positive lifestyle changes, yoga may help decrease angina (chest pain) and improve their ability to exercise and perform household physical activities. Yoga may also improve balance, coordination, and flexibility. Yoga may improve cardiovascular function and decrease risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Yoga may be a useful addition to standard therapies (such as prescription blood pressure or cholesterol-lowering drugs) in people at risk of heart attack.

Headache
Preliminary research reports that yoga may reduce the intensity and frequency of tension or migraine headaches, decreasing the need for pain-relieving drugs.

Insomnia
Preliminary research reports that yoga may benefit sleep efficiency, total sleep time, number of awakenings, and quality of sleep.

Performance enhancement
Preliminary studies in humans report that yoga may improve human reaction time, arousal, information processing, and concentration.

Pregnancy
Early research suggests yoga during pregnancy is safe and may improve outcomes.

Weigh
t loss, obesity
Preliminary research does not provide clear answers. Yoga in addition to healthy eating habits may reduce weight.

We hope that this  overview of the known benefits of Yoga encourages you to give this ancient technique a try (if you haven't already). There are a number of Yoga options for you at our studio, so pick a class and give it a try.

  • Vinyasa Yoga - a flowing, moving meditation of breath and postures - stimulating, heating and purifying system of developing the body, increasing mental clarity, and uplifting the soul. Our studio offers a class for a Yogi at every level of training, from the very beginner to an advanced practitioner.
  • Meditative Moving Yoga - a combination of traditional Hatha Yoga with Ashtanga Yoga. It is suitable for all beginners as well as regular Yoga practitioners. This flowing class will go through an opening prayer, Pranayama, Sun Salutations, weight reducing asanas and postures that will rejuvenate the mind and body, increase flexibility, strength and stability. The class will end with 10 minutes of meditation & relaxation, and finish with a closing prayer.
  • Budokon - a fusion of Power Yoga, Martial Arts and Meditation in one complete system. This system develops strength of the body, sharpness of the mind, and serenity of the spirit. This class combines 30 minutes of flexibility-enhancing yoga with 30 minutes of body-toning karate kicks and is topped off by mind-focusing meditation.
