Dear Client,
We hope that this
newsletter finds you in good health. We were happy to see a few
familiar faces return to our studio after a summer hiatus. We were
also delighted to sponsor a American Cancer Society fund-raising
Yoga workshop in October to honor the Breast Cancer month.
We recognize
that as Thanksgiving approaches most of us can accumulate even more
stress than usual as we scramble to get everything ready for the big
day and to kick off the holiday season. As such,
this month we thought we would introduce you to some of the new
faces at our studio and invite you to participate in an exciting
workshop titled: "Yoga Nidra - The Art of Relaxation." Also
check out a brief overview of a common stress disorder, called the
Yu Syndrome, described by
the Chinese physicians over three thousand years ago.
We look forward
to seeing you at our studio, a place where you can get fit, gain
flexibility, stamina and relaxation, all under one roof!

off to attain more blissful state of awareness, a relaxation much more intense
than ordinary sleep. It also prepares the mind for spiritual discipline.

YU
SYNDROME:
An old condition, now more prevalent than ever!
By David Boguslavsky MD
Over three thousand years ago the
Chinese physicians witnessed a number of their patients get a rash of symptoms that
seemed contradictory at first glance. On the one hand their patients had
symptoms of an internal deficiency, on the other there were definite signs of excess. These
were as follows:
|
Deficiency Symptoms |
Excess Symptoms |
-
Fatigue
-
Tiredness
-
Lightheadedness
-
Cold feet
-
Craving Sweets or Salt
-
Lumbar pains
-
Poor memory
-
Ear ringing
|
-
Irritability
-
Frustration & anxiety
-
Neck & shoulder pain
-
Tension headaches and
migraines
-
Bouts of explosive
anger
-
Palpitations and heart
pains
-
Difficulty falling
asleep with
restlessness
-
Bitter taste in mouth

Once the old
doctors recognized this pattern they started looking for the culprit behind this
common imbalance of body and mind. They discovered that it was most commonly
brought on by overwork, not getting enough sleep, poor nutrition, excessive
stress and insufficient exercise. These factors, of course, are as prevalent
today as they were three millennia ago. All of us are running on the treadmill
of life that demands more and more of us, while leaving us less and less to do
it with.
To accomplish all that we set out to do, we stress our bodies and minds
which depletes our resources faster than the body can replenish them. In
essence, the Yu
Syndrome, as it is known in Chinese medicine, is the price we pay for the
life over-activity and under-relaxation.
The ancients
believed that in order for one to have great health, there needs to be a balance
in the body, the "yin" needs to be plentiful to balance out the "yang," which
tends towards excess. Within this framework the Yu Syndrome begins to make
sense: our lifestyles deplete the Yin Qi (leading to the deficiency symptoms
above), and subsequently there is an overabundance of "yang" (leading to the symptoms
of excess).
While it is
exceedingly difficult to change your life, some steps can be taken to alleviate
the Yu syndrome. The ancients have passed down traditional acupuncture and herbal
formulae that calm the mind, nourish the yin, and "drain the excess yang." With
treatment many patients find
themselves feeling healthier, having fewer symptoms and less pain, and having a
greater sense of balance in their lives. The effects of the treatments are
made stronger by regular exercise, more sleep and lower consumption of
caffeinated products which tend to rev up a system already strained. |

Odds & Ends...

Countdown to "The Better Half" - 5 months to a BravoTV show partially
shot at our Warren studio which asks the question of whether a non-exercising
doctor (my husband) can be turned into a fitness instructor in less than two
days. If this sounds funny, wait till you see the show!
A Hearty Thanks to those who donated their money and time to our
Fundraiser effort last month.
Mommy & Me -
we are looking to start a Mommy and Me workshop for infants and their busy moms.
Potential times to launch this class would be Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday
from
11:15 to noon. Please let us know if you would like to participate in a regular
workshop, what day works for you, and the age of your child. |
